about this dj

Born in Manchester, UK in May 1980, Duncan was quickly immersed in the world of music from a young age with Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac and Lionel Richie being his starting point in life. Continuing in the pop music vein, he began working at the infamous Our Price in Stockport. Not only to vacuum clean floor or to re-arrange the top 40, but it was here in 1996 that he learned about labels such as Good Looking Records, Reinforced Records and R&S, and discovered dance music. One year later he was down at Richer Sounds in said town, to pick up his first set of belt-drive turntables and made-to-fade mixer. Life would never be the same again.

A love of drum & bass from DJs such as LTJ Bukem and Fabio were the inspiration for the next ten years, and a serious addiction to vinyl. Around 3000 12" vinyls later with enough knowledge of the music, he decided to set up Binary Soul Records in 2008. This was a two year project ending with ten releases between eight artists, with reviews in IDJ and Knowledge Magazine for every release and plays from top-name DJs including LTJ Bukem, DJ Nookie and DJ Stunna. The music and artists were chosen personally as a representation of what he believed was good drum & bass. But music changes and people's perceptions of music also change.

4:4 music had always been influential. Fluid Motion would regularly be seen out dancing to techno in Manchester between 1996-1999, the key word being dancing. Nights like Bugged Out at Sankeys Soap were absolutely seminal back in the mid-nineties with big name Detroit techno DJs and UK drum & bass DJs playing on the same night. This was all very exciting and inspirational to him, at a time when a lot of groundbreaking dance music was being released. It was only logical to return to the 4:4 music he danced to as a teenager, but this time deeper, more sophisticated and more refined. Combining the atmosphere of techno and the soul of drum & bass, deep house clicked and Fluid Motion began.
